Your Swing Blueprint: Stay on the line, then adjust

17 · Varsity · Bats right, throws right · Shortstop · Goal: Drive the ball in the middle of the field · Age 9

Age 9. Draft age band. Needs Jeff before any age-specific number is used. The scale stays 20–80. This player is compared only with their own past. Meter lines stay where they are today. Sessions stay shorter and reps stay fewer. A smaller count is not set. Uploads for ages 9–12 stay blocked until a verified parent account exists and Jeff and legal approve that flow.

Scouting scale 20–80. 50 = average for your level of play.

barrel

The fat end of the bat. That is the part that should meet the ball.

stay connected

Your hands and your hips start the swing together. The hands do not run off on their own.

hip-shoulder separation

The hips start to turn while the shoulders stay closed for a moment. Then the chest follows.

casting

The hands push the bat away from the body too early, before the body has started the swing.

attack angle

How much the bat is tilted up or down when it meets the ball.

oppo

The field on the same side the hitter stands. For a right-handed hitter, that is left field.

rollover

The bat rolls over the top of the ball, so the ball is pounded into the ground.

posted finish

After the swing or the throw, the front leg stays firm instead of collapsing.

scap load

The back shoulder blade pinches together before the swing starts.

layback

The throwing arm tips back, with the palm facing away, before the ball comes forward.

drop and drive

The back knee bends, then the back leg pushes the body toward home.

kinetic chain

The legs and hips start the move. The chest follows. The bat or the arm is last.

front toss

A partner stands a few steps in front and flips the ball underhand.

tee

A stand that holds the ball still. No one throws.

high-cock slot

The throwing hand is up by the shoulder when the front foot lands.

glove side

line drive

The ball leaves flat, not popped up and not chopped into the ground.

bullpen

Pitchers throw in practice, usually with no batter, or with a coach hitting. It is not a game yet.

dry work

Swings or moves with no ball. You are practicing the body, not the result.

off-speed

A pitch that is slower than the fastball, such as a changeup or a curve.

Coach's notes

The plan Earn each step

Step 1 →Flat-bat toss.
Step 2 →Film eight swings and count the ones that stay flat.
Step 3 →Add the mixed flip only after the line is honest.
Step 4 ✓Up the middle.

The chain. The fat end of the bat drops on the low flip, the ball is popped or topped, and the down-and-away flip gets the middle-pitch swing. Fix the path and the chain breaks.

Alex, I put this front-toss clip next to your August 12 report. You are 17, you play shortstop, and you want to drive the ball in the middle of the field. Swing Score then: 46. Swing Score now: 54. That is your own August number. Missiles, not moonshots. In August the fat end of the bat worked up through a low tee. Path was 39. On this clip, middle-in, the fat end of the bat stays on the line longer and the ball jumps off the middle of the bat. Path moved from 39 to 50. Your back heel still stays down until the hip clears, and the front leg stays firm. On the middle-in toss, your hands stay with the back shoulder until the hip goes. Contact is on the middle of the bat. Do not chase a bigger swing. The line still fails when the flip is at the knees. The fat end of the bat drops under your hands and the ball is popped or topped. You fixed the still ball. A moving ball at the knees is the next step, not a new swing. Path: Journeyman on your Skill Ladder. Toss station. Cue: “Square contact rides out on a line. Go over the top of it and it dies. Pop it up and you were under it.” Pass: Eight of ten front-toss swings at the knees leave on a line or as a ground ball. None are popped up. The second miss is the pitch you do not want. On a down-and-away flip you swing the middle-pitch swing. Your hands drop, the fat end of the bat goes over the top of the ball, and it is a ground ball to the pull side. You are on time for the pitch you want. The pitch you get still gets the wrong swing, and it is not a ball driven in the middle. Adjustability: Journeyman on your Skill Ladder. Toss station. Cue: “Look for YOUR pitch in YOUR zone.” Pass: Six of ten mixed flips, in and away, are put in play up the middle. No max-intent swings. Both of those live on toss this week. The machine can wait. Live can wait.

Hitting Skill Ladder

Still ball, then an easy flip, then a machine, then a person pitching.

Apprentice is a ball that sits still, including swings with no ball. Journeyman adds an underhand flip from a few steps away. Craftsman is a pitching machine, or a partner mixing speed and spot. Master is a person pitching. A report takes two drills for the fix. Drills from the coach's practice plans come first. Timing and Approach do not have active drills yet. Those sections say drills coming. The lines under each drill are the plain version. Anything the sheet never wrote says needs coach review.
